Who We Are, What We Do

Learn More About The History and Strength of Local 831

Our History

Local 831, The Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, was born from necessity and built on solidarity. In the early days, New York City’s sanitation workers faced grueling conditions, long hours, dangerous routes, little protection, and even less recognition. But instead of backing down, they stood up. They organized. They fought not just for fair wages and safer equipment, but for something even greater: dignity, respect, and a voice at the table.

From that moment forward, Local 831 has been more than a union; it’s been a family. Our members don’t just work alongside one another; they support one another through every challenge the job throws their way, from the harshest winter storms to the hottest summer days. We show up before the city wakes, and we keep it moving long after most go home. Every borough. Every block. Every shift.

Our legacy is built on grit, pride, and purpose. It’s a legacy of teamwork, forged on the back of hard work and a deep sense of duty to our neighbors. We don’t just serve New York City, we protect it, clean it, and keep it running.

Local 831 remains as strong and united as ever, honoring those who came before us by standing firm for those who are here today, and those who will carry the torch tomorrow.
